Iron County sheriff's detectives are investigating whether a badly decomposed body found late last week near the town of Summit is that of a Nevada man.

Sheriff's Sgt. Dave Mitchell confirmed detectives have been in contact with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as they seek to identify the remains, but he declined Friday to further discuss the possible connections of the deceased to the bordering state.

"There is a specific reason [he may be from Las Vegas], but we're not commenting on the reason right now," Mitchell said.

The remains, discovered about 4:30 p.m. on May 22, just south of Summit, were so badly decomposed that investigators could not make a positive identification or determine an apparent cause of death.

The body was turned over to the Utah State Medical Examiner for an autopsy and forensic test. Preliminary results were not expected for at least a week, Mitchell said.
