Detectives confirmed Tuesday that it was an ongoing feud between rival Salt Lake City gangs that sparked a weekend brawl that left three men injured, one of them critically.

Police Detective Greg Wilking said the fight broke out Sunday around 5:40 p.m. outside a Salt Lake City home. A Jeep Cherokee with three men inside pulled up in front of the house near 500 North and 1000 West, and a confrontation with several men from inside the home rapidly developed.

Several people were left battered and bleeding after the melee, in which a bat and possibly a pipe were used. Most of the injuries were minor and did not require hospitalization, Wilking said.

No arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon. The names of victims and suspects have not been released.

Wilking said investigators had confirmed the combatants were gang members. "This wasn't a random act of violence," he said.
