An Ogden man allegedly tied rubber bands around his dog's mouth, which caused it to suffocate.

The 23-year-old man was charged Friday in 2nd District Court with torture of a companion animal, a third-degree felony. The owner told police that he was angry at the dog for chewing on his belongings, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The night of March 10, witnesses called police about the dog being inhumanely treated. The dog was tethered on "an extremely short cord" and had been muzzled with six elastic bands, wrapped 15 times around her muzzle, causing her to suffocate, according to the affidavit. The charges make no mention of the dog's breed or age.

A necropsy showed the bands were so tight, "they actually indented the dog's tongue, on the inside of the dog's mouth," according to the affidavit. "The dog was observed that way by witnesses for at least 12 hours."

The owner admitted that he had muzzled and tethered the dog, the affidavit adds.
