A 38-year-old Ogden man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for firing at officers who were trying to arrest him last year on a weapons charge.

Lorenzo Puentes pleaded guilty in federal court in Salt Lake City on Thursday to assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

U.S. District Judge Dee Benson imposed a sentence of 150 months — 30 months for the assault conviction and 120 months for discharging the firearm during a crime of violence, to run consecutively.

Puentes will be on supervised release for 60 months following the completion of his federal prison sentence.

On the evening of Nov. 4, three Special Deputy U.S. Marshals — local police officers assigned to the Marshal Service's Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team — were watching an Ogden residence where Puentes, who had an outstanding no-bail arrest warrant, was believed to be.

When Puentes stepped outside to smoke a cigarette, the deputies identified themselves as police officers.

Puentes fired one round from a .22-caliber handgun toward the deputies, which struck a fence behind them, then turned and ran. The deputies chased Puentes for about a block before arresting him. Police found the gun in a nearby driveway the next morning.

In April of 2013, state court documents allege Puentes wielded a knife and threatened to kill a woman in Clearfield, then choked her and left the residence after taking $40.

At the time he was restricted from possession of a weapon because of a previous felony conviction and also had a previous domestic violence conviction, according to filings in state court.

Puentes pleaded guilty class A misdemeanor possession of a deadly weapon with intent to assault someone. He was placed on probation, but failed to meet with his probation officer and a warrant was issued in October.
