A 5.4-magnitude earthquake rattled a sparsely populated area along the southwestern Utah border with Nevada early Friday afternoon.

The Washington County sheriff's dispatch office said it had received several calls from residents who felt the 12:47 p.m. jolt, or a 3.8-magnitude aftershock at 1:05 p.m., but no injuries or property damage were reported.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations said the quake, about 2.6 miles deep, had an epicenter about 63 miles northwest of St. George, 48 miles northwest of Mesquite, Nev., and 24 miles southwest of Caliente, Nev.
