An Ogden family of six escaped an early Wednesday morning fire, but their pet dog died in the blaze.

Ogden Deputy Fire Chief Eric Bauman said crews were rushed to a home at 2024 Laine Ave. at 5:21 a.m., but the flames and smoke already had spread from a utility room and caused $50,000 in damage before they could be doused.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The Utah Red Cross was assisting the family — four adults and two children — with food, clothing and shelter.
