Rear-ended by another vehicle, a Postal Service truck made an unscheduled, 3-ton special delivery — into a South Jordan home.

South Jordan police spokesman Sam Winkler said the chain-reaction collisions occurred about 2 p.m. Tuesday, when a red Subaru hatchback veered off the roadway and struck the postal truck, which had pulled onto the shoulder near 1900 West and 11400 South.

The Subaru was traveling at about 45 mph when it rear-ended the truck, propelling it into a nearby home. The truck severed a natural gas meter and line, as well as a water line leading inside the residence.

Occupants of the home were evacuated and traffic around the accident scene was closed for about an hour while wreckage was removed.

The female driver of the postal truck and the male driver of the Subaru both were wearing seat belts and escaped with minor injuries. The Subaru's driver was cited for failing to maintain safe lane travel, Winkler said.

No one inside the home was hurt, but estimated damages exceeded $5,000, police said.
