A traffic accident Tuesday propelled a U.S. Postal Service delivery van into a house, South Jordan police said.

The postal worker and the driver of another car received only minor injuries. The accident happened about 2 p.m. near 1900 W. 11400 South.

The woman was delivering mail to the residence and was stopped on the shoulder of 11400 South.

A red Subaru hatchback left the roadway and struck the back of the postal vehicle at about 45 miles per hour, according to a South Jordan police news release. The mail truck veered off the roadway into a house, hitting a gas meter and severing the gas line. The impact also severed a water line and flooded the basement.

The residents were evacuated from the home. South Jordan police estimated he damage at $5,000. The road was closed for about an hour.

The driver of the Subaru was issued a citation for failing to maintain safe lane travel.
