A 2-year-old Layton boy has died, and his mother and her boyfriend likely will face child-abuse homicide charges.

Layton police Lt. Travis Lyman confirmed that the toddler, in critical condition over the weekend, died early Monday morning at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The boy, identified as James Sieger Jr., had been flown to the hospital after his mother, 23-year-old Jasmine Bridgeman, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Joshua Schoenenberger, brought him to the emergency room at Layton's Davis Hospital early Saturday.

The child was having difficulty breathing and, doctors said, showed signs of having been beaten. A helicopter rushed him to Primary Children's, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair internal injuries.

Bridgeman and Schoenenberger were arrested Saturday and booked into the Davis County jail on child-abuse felony and misdemeanor counts.

"We are in the process of amending those charges now that the child has passed away," Lyman said.

Police said there were indications that the physical abuse of the child had been going on for some time. The most recent incident, according to a probable-cause statement, was triggered by Schoenenberger's anger at the child over failed potty training.

Court records show that Schoenenberger, a California native, pleaded guilty in 2010 to a reduced charge of class A misdemeanor reckless endangerment in return for a second-degree felony count of child abuse being dismissed. The charges stemmed from an incident where Schoenenberger, reportedly enraged over a water balloon fight, pulled a child off a bicycle, choked him and burned him with a cigarette.

In August 2011, he was sentenced to 120 days in jail, followed by 24 months of probation. He also was ordered to participate in anger counseling.

Schoenenberger also has a history of drug possession and distribution charges, the most recent involving a Wednesday 2nd District Court appearance on felony heroin possession.
