A 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg in West Valley City on Tuesday in what appears to be an accident, police said.

The girl was seen walking in the neighborhood of 3200 South and 5100 West late in the afternoon with a 16-year-old male when witnesses heard a gunshot and called police, spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said.

The girl, who was hit in the leg with a bullet from a revolver, was taken to a hospital in good condition, Vainuku said.

She said the incident is still under investigation but investigators believe it was likely an accident. The teenage boy stayed with the girl after the shooting and has been cooperating, according to Vainuku.
