A Wendover girl is dead after being accidentally struck by an SUV driven by a family friend late Monday night.

Tooele County Sheriff Paul Wimmer said 3-year-old Vanessa Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene, in the 700 East block of Mariah Avenue (300 South), about 10:15 p.m.

The girl's extended family and friends had spent the day together, playing soccer, and had gone to the home to wind up activities. Several vehicles were loading in front of the residence to in order to leave, including a Chevrolet Suburban driven by 23-year-old Jesus Gonzalez.

"In all the confusion of everyone loading, he apparently didn't see her step in front of the Suburban, and ran over her," Wimmer said. "We continue to investigate, but at this point, it doesn't appear to have been anything but a tragic accident."
