A Midvale mom knew her teenage son was angry, but she sure didn't think he would run her over with the family's SUV.

The 17-year-old boy did just that, according to Unified Police, putting his mother in the hospital and — after he subsequently crashed the vehicle and briefly fled arriving officers on foot — himself in juvenile jail.

UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said officers were initially dispatched to the family's home, near 7700 South and 500 East, at 5:34 p.m. Monday on what they thought was a simple automobile accident.

"But when they got there, it turned out to be much more," Hoyal said. "The mom and her son were arguing and he wanted to leave. Mom said, 'No,' but he got into the Dodge Journey SUV, which was in the driveway and started it up. Mom stood in front of the vehicle to stop him, but ran over her and tried to speed away."

Moments later, the teen lost control of the SUV, went over a curb, up a sidewalk, took out a mailbox and light pole and finally smashed into a parked Chevrolet Blazer. He then ran back to his house and then back into the street as UPD officers arrived and quickly arrested him.

The 39-year-old mother was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where she was initially listed in serious condition. However, on Tuesday, the woman reportedly was improving and was expected to recover.

Her son, meanwhile, was booked into the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center on suspicion of domestic violence, aggravated assault and hit-and-run.
