Pleasant Grove police have completed their investigation into a homeowner's fatal shooting of a man during an alleged weekend home invasion.

Pleasant Grove Police Chief Michael Smith confirmed Monday that the case had been turned over to the Utah County Attorney's Office to determine if the early Sunday morning slaying was a case of self-defense. Smith declined to say what recommendation, if any, his investigators had made.

"Our detectives have done a thorough investigation into this incident [and it has been] forwarded to the Utah County Attorney's Office for review [where] a determination will be made regarding any possible charges or clearing the case as a justified shooting," Smith said.

Police said that about 5:40 a.m. Sunday, Christian Chichia, 24, allegedly pounded on the front door of a house near 1700 W. 60 South, waking the homeowner and his wife.

The homeowner retrieved a handgun and went to the front door, but by then Chichia — a stranger to the homeowner — had climbed onto his second-story balcony. The homeowner went to the balcony and cracked open the door to ask what Chichia wanted. It was when Chichia allegedly tried to force his way in that the homeowner shot him once in the chest.

Chichia was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
