Officers with the Roosevelt Police Department shot and killed a man who refused to put down a handgun Sunday, police say. Officers from Roosevelt and the Duchesne County Sheriff's Office responded at about 12:30 p.m. to a call regarding a man with a handgun acting erratically near Uintah Basin Medical Center. They pursued the man to a nearby wooded area where they made contact, a news release from the sheriff's office states. He was later identified as Kevin Vance Norton, 36, a felon on probation who was not allowed to have a firearm.

Police engaged in "negotiations and less-than-lethal attempts to disarm Norton," but failed to do so. He was shot by a Roosevelt police officer at about 1:30 p.m. Norton was transported to Uintah Basin Medical Center within three minutes of the shooting, the release states. He was pronounced dead soon after arriving.

Officials have requested that the Utah State Bureau of Investigations investigate the incident, in accordance with Utah law, the sheriff's office said. Uintah County Attorney G. Mark Rhomas also agreed to screen the case.
