A semi-trailer rig hauling cars rolled on Interstate 80 near the Salt Lake-Tooele county line, closing down eastbound lanes for several hours as the Friday morning commute got underway.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the big rig tipped and rolled at 4:38 a.m., scattering seven cars onto the freeway. Another vehicle, following the truck, then collided with one of those vehicles.

No serious injuries were reported, but the semi's driver had to kick out his windshield to get free, Royce said.

Commuters from Tooele County heading to the Salt Lake Valley were delayed 15 minutes or more, being redirected onto Highway 201 at milepost 102 until the wreckage was cleared and traffic on I-80 resumed late Friday morning.

The Utah Department of Transportation said that the left lane of eastbound 201 near 8400 West was closed for a time due to a crash as well, adding to the woes of motorists.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.
