A Vernal toddler remained in critical condition Thursday, two days after he was found unconscious in a hot tub by family members.

Uintah County Sheriff's Cpl. Brian Fletcher said there had been no reported change in the condition of the 16-month-old boy, who was found in the water, unresponsive, Tuesday night at his home near 4000 South and 1500 West.

Deputies said earlier that a family member had partially removed the hot tub's cover to check the water, stepped away and the toddler somehow got into the tub.

The boy was found in the tub after relatives noticed him missing. Deputies did not know exactly how long he was in the water, but said it was believed to have been a short amount of time.

Family members pulled the child from the water, began CPR and called 911. Paramedics rushed the toddler first to Ashley Regional Medical Center, from where he was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The investigation was ongoing, but deputies said the incident appeared to have been a tragic accident.
