As if finals week isn't enough of a nightmare.

The University of Utah's home page and some classroom portals went dark Wednesday afternoon as some students tried to log in and take exams.

As of early Wednesday evening, school officials didn't know exactly what went wrong or when the glitch would be resolved, U. spokeswoman Maria O'Mara said.

The university tweeted from its main and information technology accounts that some university websites were down. The U. also sent a "campus alert" email at 5 p.m. noting that sites were unavailable, including CIS, Kronos, go.utah.edu, Canvas and PeopleSoft, as well as some department and college websites.

"An estimated timeframe for resolution is not available," the email alert said. "Technical teams are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Campus will be notified when services are restored."

Between 30 and 40 students attempting to take a test remotely could not log on to the system. O'Mara said they will be able to retake the test tomorrow.

The "service disruption" started around 2:00 p.m. It also forced down another software system used for payroll and human resources. No sensitive information related to students or patients in the U. medical sytem was compromised, O'Mara added.

University information technology workers believe the patchwork of issues was rooted in a data storage problem.

Commencement is May 7.
