West Valley City police resumed their hunt Thursday for an "armed and dangerous" fugitive after he eluded a late-night pursuit by dousing his headlights and driving into oncoming traffic.

WVCPD spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said that 30-year-old David Hernandez, sought on warrants for robbery and aggravated assault, was spotted by officers about 10 p.m. Wednesday, driving a blue, 2010 model Ford Focus near 150 W. 4500 South.

When police attempted to pull him over, Hernandez allegedly sped off, entering northbound Interstate 15 at 4500 South, then proceeding onto Interstate 80 eastbound and southbound Interstate 215 at 80 mph.

Vainuku said that Hernandez exited the freeway at about 4500 South and started driving in circles through residential and commercial streets, twice attempting to ram police cruisers. By this time, Unified Police units has joined in the chase.

"After about 13 minutes, Hernandez turned off his lights and started driving into oncoming traffic and the pursuit was terminated in the area of 3900 South 900 East. Officers searched the area but were not able to locate the vehicle," Vainuku said.

Hernandez is described as 5-foot-9, about 230 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Anyone with information about him is asked to call WVCPD at 801-840-4000.
