A West Valley City apartment building was declared a total loss — and 28 people were displaced from four units — after a "suspicious" fire gutted the structure Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters quickly controlled the fire at 4533 S. Dean Drive (3825 West). By about 4:40 p.m., police had taken one person into custody, who was later released, fire officials tweeted.

Officials said it was not immediately clear how the fire started, but that they will investigate to deem whether charges should be filed.

The building did not have working smoke detectors.

One person jumped from a window to escape the fire and was taken to a hospital.

Several West Valley City police officers assisted in evacuating the building, and some suffered minor smoke inhalation, officials tweeted.
