It's the case of the double stabbing: but who thrust his knife first?

Both men claim they cut the other in self-defense during an altercation about 2 a.m. Monday, in an apartment in downtown Salt Lake City's Gateway Mall area.

It began with a 911 call reporting a bleeding man at 641 W. North Temple. Officers found he had been cut on the neck — and he claimed his assailant lived in a nearby apartment.

But when officers went to the scene, they found another bleeding man, and he told them the first man had cut him first, and that he then stabbed him in self-defense.

The first man was seriously injured, while the second was treated for minor cuts, police said.

Police Detective Greg Wilking said both men were 25 to 30 years old, but investigators continued trying to determine whether one or both men will be arrested.
