Plan to drive into downtown Salt Lake City on Saturday morning? You might as well get out and walk. Or, better yet, enter and run in the Salt Lake City Marathon.

Either way, you are likely to get where you are going a lot faster on foot than behind the wheel.

The Salt Lake City Police Department was to begin closing downtown streets, for varying amounts of time, at midnight Friday. Restrictions in some cases will extend to 6 p.m. Saturday to make way for several marathon-related events.

Police officers will be stationed at some 200 traffic posts to keep an eye on motorists, spectators and participants alike.

SLCPD says its officers will try accommodate through-traffic when it is safe and prudent to do so, but motorists and residents should expect delays as race events progress throughout the day.

With that in mind, here are starting times for the various marathon events:

— Bike Tour: 6 a.m.

— Hand Cycle, Wheel Chair: 6:20 a.m.

— Full and Half Marathons: 7 a.m.

— 5K: 7:10 a.m.

— Kids K: 10:45 a.m.

And as for street closures, and their anticipated times:

— 200 East between Washington and Library Squares: 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

— 500 South between 300 East and State Street: 3 a.m. to 3 p.m.

— Federal Heights Drive and 11th Avenue: 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

— Bonneville Boulevard and State Street: 5:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

— South Temple, 900 East, 1100 East: 5:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

— 1500 East, Sugar House Park, 1700 South: 6:15 a.m. to 11 a.m.

— 2100 South, 1700 East, 2700 South, 2000 East: 6:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

— 2300 East and Holladay Boulevard: 6:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

— 4500 South and 3900 South: 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

— Highland Drive, 2700 South, 600 East: 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

— Liberty Park (east side): 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

— 900 South, 300 East, 400 East, 500 East: 6:45 a.m. to 9 a.m.

And this, for especially slow, yet resilient runners: the marathon course will be closed at 1:30 p.m., meaning participants still short of the finish will need to move to the sidewalk or follow normal roadway rules.
