A Clearfield man is accused of causing the death of a woman when he punched her during a fight at a New Year's Eve party, causing her to fall and fatally hit her head.

Alcario Jesus Archuleta-Valdez, 32, made his initial court appearance Wednesday on one count of third-degree felony charge of homicide by assault.

Archuleta-Valdez waived his right to a preliminary hearing and an arraignment hearing was set for May 5 before 2nd District Judge David Connors.

Archuleta-Valdez was at a party with the victim, Bobbie Jo Barnett, 34, also of Clearfield, on Jan. 1 when a fight broke out between two other people, police wrote in charges filed this week. After the fight, the victim walked toward where Archuleta-Valdez was standing. Archuleta-Valdez, who was drunk, "then turned around and punched the victim, which caused the victim to fall and hit her head," investigators wrote.

Police say Barnett stood up and walked around immediately after the punch, but two days later complained of a bad headache and was taken to hospital where she died of head trauma, according to the Associated Press, which reported that prosecutors did not file charges until last week because they had to wait for autopsy results.

Archuleta-Valdez has been serving probation for felony theft, assault and drug possession charges in Davis and Weber counties, according to court records.
