Early Thursday morning pileups on icy Salt Lake City interstate overpasses left several people injured and reduced commuter traffic to single lanes in at least two locations.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said black ice caught at least 10 motorists by surprise between 4:45 a.m. and 5 a.m. between North Temple and 9th South on Interstate 15. The worst of the accidents involved a 15-passenger van that rolled, with at least two people believed to have sustained non-life threatening injuries.

About 5:30 a.m., a woman was in serious condition after her vehicle crashed on slippery, southbound Interstate 215 near 1000 South. Another three-dozen slideoffs and non-injury crashes were reported elsewhere on freeways in the Salt Lake Valley Thursday morning.

Ice accumulation on an I-15 entry ramp at 6th South prompted Salt Lake City police to close access between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.

"Our troopers [handled] a bunch of crashes this morning, mostly single vehicles into walls and rollovers," Royce said. "There's a lot of black ice out there, it's treacherous. We're urging people to slow down and keep that in mind."
