A former Washington County jail officer will serve time behind bars for having sexual contact with female inmates at the Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane.

Steven Garrett Thayer, 29, pleaded no contest in February to three class A misdemeanor counts of custodial sexual misconduct. In exchange, prosecutors dismissed four other counts of misdemeanor counts of custodial sexual misconduct.

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced him to spend 90 days in the Iron County jail, but allowed Thayer to serve the time in four-day stretches over weekends.

Thayer was also ordered to be on probation for 36 months, and must undergo a psychosexual evaluation and complete any treatment recommended.

In September 2013, Thayer was accused of having sexual relations with three female inmates, according to a probable cause statement filed with the court.

But in the plea documents, Thayer states that had the case gone to trial, the state's evidence would have shown he had sexual contact with two inmates on three separate occasions between February and April 2013.

Shortly after Thayer's October 2013 arrest, Washington County Sheriff's officials said the jail officer was no longer employed with the county.
