Rocky Mountain Power says copper thieves are to blame for a Thursday morning electrical outage that left nearly 6,000 homes, businesses and some traffic signals in the dark in Taylorsville, Midvale and West Jordan.

Utility spokesman Paul Murphy said the vandals broke into the Jordan Parkway Substation at 7000 S. 1000 West, risking electrocution as they stripped copper wiring.

"I just can't imagine anyone risking death like that for some copper," Murphy said. "We're working with law enforcement to catch them."

The outage, about 7 a.m. Thursday, affected 5,763 clients in the 84047, 84118, 84123, 84129, 84084 ZIP code areas.

Crews expected to complete repairs and restore service by noon.
