A group of Vietnam veterans is planning to stage a motorcycle rally Monday, urging Gov. Gary Herbert to veto a bill that seeks to name a portion of the Veterans Memorial Highway — or Interstate 15 — after late House Speaker Becky Lockhart.

The bill to name the section of the highway through Utah County the "Rebecca D. Lockhart section of the Veterans Memorial Highway" passed the Legislature unanimously and is awaiting action by Herbert.

But some veterans, their families and others are urging Herbert to veto the bill, saying naming the section of I-15 after Lockhart takes away from the honor meant for veterans.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Keven Stratton, R-Orem, has said Lockhart was instrumental in rebuilding that stretch of I-15 and co-naming the section for Lockhart doesn't diminish the respect felt for veterans.

The veterans are planning a motorcycle rally at the Capitol for 6 p.m. Monday calling for Herbert's veto. The governor has until Wednesday to act on the bill.

Lockhart died in January from an extremely rare degenerative neurological disease just weeks after leaving office.
