A Woodruff man was killed Thursday night and his passenger was injured in a rear-end crash on Interstate 80 near Coalville in Summit County, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

George O. Frazier, 71, was driving an SUV partially in the right lane and partially in the emergency lane much slower than traffic speed when the vehicle was hit at 6:23 p.m. by a Dodge truck, Sgt. Todd Royce said.

The impact pushed the SUV off the road and ejected Frazier, who suffered fatal injuries, Royce said. The woman in the car was critically injured, Royce said; neither was wearing a seat belt. The man driving the truck was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The SUV was reported to be having mechanical problems, Royce said, and investigators are looking into whether it was pulling out of the emergency lane into the travel lane when it was hit.
