A man is dead after accidentally shooting himself in the neck, according to West Valley City police.

The 57-year-old man was drinking with friends Friday night at a home near 4600 W. Dunsmoore Way (2965 South) when he pulled out a gun, said Roxeanne Vainuku, spokeswoman for the West Valley City Police Department.

Vainuku said the man was "kind of looking at it, showing the gun. At some point he took the magazine out of the gun and pointed the gun to his own throat, not realizing there was still a bullet in the chamber."

Police believe the shooting, which occurred about 7:45 p.m., was an accident.
