A Murray convenience store clerk shot during a holdup was in improved condition Thursday after surgery, but two suspects in the robbery remained at large.

David Marsh, 62, had been in critical condition following the 6 a.m. shooting at the Lee Mart, 5905 S. 700 West. Murray police said he suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest, as well has head injuries — possibly from a separate blow, either from the suspects or perhaps as he fell.

The longtime employee, now in serious condition and expected to recover, was found — probably just minutes after the crime — by two arriving customers. The customers became suspicious when they could not find the clerk — and discovered an empty cash register tray in an aisle.

Moments later, the customers called 911 after finding the bloodied Marsh on the floor behind the counter, said police spokesman Kenny Bass.

Video from a security camera show two young males, both wearing red bandanas over their faces and carrying handguns, burst into the business and demand money. The clerk complied, but reportedly threw the cash register tray at them as they fled.

That, it is believed, is when one of the suspects turned and shot him.

Bass said one suspect was wearing all dark clothing, while the second suspect wore a black sweatshirt or jacket and light-colored pants.
