A man who crashed his car on Interstate 15 and then leaped from an overpass is expected to survive his injuries — and Utah Highway Patrol troopers think they know why it all happened.

UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said Thursday that it appeared the man, whose identity was not released beyond describing him as being in his early 30s, was intoxicated when he collided with a concrete barrier wall on southbound I-15 near 7200 South about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. He then tried to flee the scene by jumping, not realizing he was 30-40 feet above the pavement.

Initially in critical condition, the man was reported on Thursday to be improving and was upgraded to serious at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

Royce said it appeared the majority of his injuries were facial fractures, along with bruising and lacerations.

Investigation of the matter continued, though the filing of any charges likely will wait until the man has recovered.
