SWAT officers entered a Sandy home following a five-hour standoff Thursday morning, only to find the barricaded gunman inside was dead of an apparent suicide.

Sandy police Sgt. Dean Carriger confirmed that several hours after the last of four gunshots was heard from inside the home in the 9200 South block of Quail Hollow Drive (2600 East), SWAT — having obtained a search warrant — deployed a camera-carrying robot into the house.

About 9:10 a.m., the 37-year-old man's body was located by the robot and officers entered to secure the scene, along with evidence including the .30-.30 rifle the man had apparently used.

The man's identity was not released pending efforts to notify his next of kin.

Carriger said the incident began at 4 a.m. when a woman, calling 911 from the basement of the man's home, reported hearing three gunshots from upstairs.

Carriger said arriving officers were able to bring the woman, who was uninjured, to safety. They also were initially able to contact the man, who sounded intoxicated, by telephone about 5 a.m. He indicated he planned to take his life, and then officers heard one more gunshot.

Police cordoned off a two-block area around the home and asked neighbors to shelter in place. SWAT officers arrived and were trying to reestablish contact with the man.
