Hurricane police have arrested a man after a high school student reported an attempted abduction at gunpoint.

Police booked a 39-year-old LaVerkin man into Washington County Jail under suspicion of aggravated kidnapping and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Hurricane Police Department.

About 8 a.m. Wednesday, said Hurricane police Sgt. Brandon Buella, a male suspect brandished a firearm and tried to force a girl into his vehicle outside Hurricane High School.

The girl ran into the school and reported the incident to the vice principal, who called police.

The girl's report prompted police to institute a "lockout" at schools in the southwestern Utah community Wednesday morning.

As a precaution, students in all six Hurricane-area schools were kept inside locked buildings while police conducted their manhunt. By 11 a.m., the lockout had been lifted.
