Nine firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation after a two-alarm blaze broke out in their west Salt Lake City station house.
Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay said two captains heard noises at 1:27 a.m. coming from the second-floor utility room, directly above their room in Station 2, at 270 W. 300 North.
Smoke alarms began to activate throughout the station as the captains alerted their seven fire crew members, who were sleeping in an upstairs toom. Smoke in the hallway prompted the crew to slide down the pole from their room to the vehicle bay below.
After the crew escaped the flames, they moved a fire engine and truck from the station bay, and then began fighting the fire as additional crews were sent to the scene from other stations. The fire spread from the utility room, which contains several blankets, rags and towels, to the station kitchen, Asay said. Both rooms sustained heavy damage.
All nine members of Station 2's crew were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, but no serious injuries were reported.
Investigators from Salt Lake City Fire and Unified Fire Authority were trying to determine the cause of the fire. A damage estimate was not released.
