Lawmakers removed Thursday what they say may be an unfair advantage for incumbent county clerks in elections: having their names appear multiple times on the ballot.

To certify ballots as official, their names and signatures appear on ballots. Also, their names appear as candidates in their races.

HB166 would remove county clerks' names and signatures from the certification. "It shouldn't be an advertisement for the incumbent on the ballot," said Senate President Wayne Niederhauser, R-Sandy.

The Senate approved the House-passed bill on a 24-0 vote and sent it to Gov. Gary Herbert for his signature.
