A LaVerkin man and his dog escaped unharmed, but their southwestern Utah house was a total loss after flames quickly spread to engulf their home on Tuesday.

LaVerkin Police Chief Ben Lee said on Wednesday that the house was a complete loss, and it was fortunate fire crews from Hurricane, Washington City and Colorado City were able to keep it from spreading into adjacent buildings along the 300 West block of 600 North.

Lee said winds gusting past 30 mph made firefighters' task of snuffing the flames about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday all that more difficult.

Flames also destroyed a power pole next to the house, triggering a short-lived electrical outage in the area.

No injuries were reported to either residents or emergency responders.

The cause remained under investigation.
