Ogden police, still lacking suspect details in a Monday night shooting death, issued an appeal to the public for information pointing them toward the person or persons responsible for the slaying.

Ogden police Lt. Danielle Croyle said on Tuesday that detectives worked through much of the night trying to develop leads in the shooting of a 34-year-old man about 7 p.m. near 3500 Jefferson Avenue.

Croyle identified the victim as 34-year-old Steven Carroll Ferguson, of Ogden.

The man was found lying in the roadway and rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police would not release details on how many times, or where on his body Ferguson was wounded, except to say he was shot at least once.

Details on a suspect or suspects remained hazy, too. Police could only say witnesses saw a man wearing a white T-shirt and dark jeans fleeing the scene.

Both the OPD's Major Crimes detectives and the Weber County Homicide Task Force were investigating, but police did not confirm reports that the shooting may have been gang-related.

Anyone with information on this case is urged to call OPD at 801-629-8221.

Ferguson has a criminal record that begins in 1999 with a misdemeanor conviction for carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle. The same year he pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree felony discharging a firearm from a vehicle, which resulted in a zero-to-five-year prison sentence, according to a search of Utah court records.

Since then, he has incurred misdemeanor convictions for animal cruelty, dog at large, dog attacking others, violation of an order enjoining public nuisance and criminal mischief, court records show.
