A Somalian national who allegedly shot and killed a man during a dispute at a weekend party in Millcreek was behind bars Monday.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said that after being treated at a hospital for fight-related injuries, Ahmed Ali, 29, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of second-degree felony homicide and third-degree burglary. He was being held on $200,000 bail.

Meanwhile, Hoyal said Monday that UPD had found the purported murder weapon inside a car near the shooting scene.

Ali is believed to have ditched the handgun after running from the home, near 1500 East and 3350 South, about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Ali allegedly shot Modibo Diallo, 33, of Murray, during an argument over undisclosed issues. Diallo was rushed to a hospital, but soon thereafter was pronounced dead.

Within a half hour of the initial 911 call, Ali was spotted in the 1700 East block of Millcreek Circle. Police said Ali was pounding on the door of a home.

Residents fled, and a UPD SWAT team located the suspect hiding in the residence's garage, where he was taken into custody. But officers, aided by dogs, were not immediately able to locate the firearm used in the crime.

Hoyal said anyone with information about the case should call UPD at 801-743-7000 or 385-468-9614.
