College students pondering journalism's role in shaping college and professional sports now can win $2,500 for writing down their thoughts.

The winning, 500-word entry in an essay contest sponsored by the McCarthey Family Foundation will earn the author a cash prize. The deadline for entries is March 6.

The competition theme draws inspiration from sportscaster and Olympic Games commentator Bob Costas, who is scheduled to give the McCarthey Family Foundation Lecture this spring. His address on "the changing perceptions and policies" in collegiate and pro sports is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Rowland Hall in Salt Lake City. The lecture is free and open to the public.
