A teenage boy accidentally shot himself in the abdomen while he and his family were target shooting in Washington County.

The family was shooting in the Warner Valley area Saturday afternoon when the 17-year-old accidentally shot himself just before 4 p.m. , said Washington County Sheriff's Sgt. David Crouse. Details about how the accident occurred were not available.

The spot is an unpopulated area southeast of Washington City, and "a common area where many people go to shoot," Crouse said.

The boy, who lives in St. George, was conscious and alert when emergency responders arrived, Crouse said. A helicopter flew him to Dixie Regional Medical Center. His condition, and whether the wound was considered life threatening, was not immediately available.

Crouse did not know what type of gun the teen shot himself with, other than it was a 9 mm.
