The Iron County Sheriff's Office has a rangeland mystery on its hands — along with the remains of a dog and cow that were shot and left in the southern Utah community of Beryl.

Sheriff's Sgt. Nik Johnson said on Friday that a fence-repair crew found the carcasses on Feb. 10, near 3300 West and 800 South. Johnson said it appeared the remains of the cow, stripped of edible meat, was dumped at the site after being shot where it was grazing in the area of Sand Springs Road near New Castle, about 20 miles away.

The dog — about 1-3 years old, 25-30 pounds, white with black spots on its back and head — was believed to have been shot at the scene.

Johnson said a $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Tipsters should call the Iron County Sheriff's Office at 435-867-7504.
