A Utah Transit Authority rail maintenance vehicle struck and killed a cow early Friday morning, resulting in delays for FrontRunner commuter train passengers.

UTA spokesman Remi Barron said the incident occurred about 3:30 a.m. when the rig, called a "high-rail vehicle" — basically a pickup truck modified to run on rails — hit the animal as it wandered out of the darkness and onto the tracks near Kaysville.

A bus bridge, with coaches ferrying FrontRunner passengers around the accident site to resume their journeys, was implemented between Farmington and Layton in both directions while the tracks were cleared and inspected for safety.

The farmer who owned the ill-fated bovine used a tractor to pull the carcass off the tracks, Barron said.
