Unified Police have identified a woman who was struck and killed while attempting cross a dark Taylorsville street.

UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said that 21-year-old Ashley Schalle, of Taylorsville, was hit by an SUV near 3600 West and 5400 South at 9:05 p.m. Thursday.

Witnesses told officers that Schalle was in a crosswalk, but had entered the intersection against the light. The 21-year-old female driving the SUV, who had the green light, initially fled the scene but returned a short time later to contact police about the accident.

Hoyal said on Friday that the incident remained under investigation. After the probe is complete, possible charges — including hit-and-run — could be screened by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office.
