House members are seeking to name a section of Interstate 15 after the late Speaker Becky Lockhart.

"As we have gone through the session, I'm sure all of us from time to time have had little remembrances of our former speaker, Speaker Lockhart," said Rep. Keven J. Stratton, R-Orem, who requested to open the bill Wednesday.

He said Lockhart was instrumental in the massive rebuild of I-15 from Lehi to Santaquin. "If you remember we worked to make sure it was done in the most economically feasible manner. We turned away from the strains of the federal funding and so forth and got it done for significantly less."

The bill would name that portion of the freeway the Speaker Becky D. Lockhart Memorial Section of I-15.

Opening of the bill was OK'd by a two-thirds voice vote in the House, with a handful of representatives voting in opposition. The bill is currently being drafted and will come out later in the session.
