A 29-year-old suspected heroin dealer was jailed after he allegedly stabbed another man on a west Salt Lake City street.

Police say the suspect, a 29-year-old Mexican national, was being held Tuesday in the Salt Lake County jail on a federal felony immigration order. He also was being held without bail on suspicion of second-degree felony counts of aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

A witness told police that the suspect and the victim were walking in the area of 600 West and 300 South about 2:45 p.m. Monday when the suspect stabbed the man and ran. The victim remained in critical condition at a local hospital on Tuesday.

Police spotted the suspect, who was positively identified by the witness, several blocks away near 100 S. Main St. and arrested him.

According to a probable cause statement, 30 balloons of heroin were found on the suspect's person.
