A Utah State University employee accidentally released the Social Security numbers and names of 347 students.

The Logan university staff member in the veterans resource office accidentally sent an e-mail on Thursday containing that information to a group of USU's student veterans — 1,033 people, according to a university news release. Besides the names and social security numbers, no other personal information was in the e-mail, according to USU.

The employee immediately realized what had happened and contacted the information technology department to see if the e-mail could be stopped, said USU spokesman Tim Vitale. But it couldn't.

"USU took immediate action to notify those people affected and offered to enroll them in a credit monitoring program for the next 12 months at no cost," the news release reads. University officials also advised the affected students to keep an eye on their financial accounts.

"This was an unintentional human error in which a critical procedure was not followed," the release reads. "We have already changed processes in response to this incident and reviewed procedures with the office involved."
