Highway crews will begin Tuesday extending split lanes for construction on Interstate 15 in Davis County southward to 2600 South in Bountiful.

The northbound split extension will affect Bountiful's 2600 South, 500 South and 400 North exits, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

On Tuesday night, northbound I-15 will be reduced to one lane while crews re-stripe the freeway. Southbound lane splits are scheduled to be extended the following week. Southbound I-15 will be reduced to one lane for re-striping on the night of Feb. 10.

The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the lane split zones. Drivers wishing to exit in those areas must stay in right-hand lanes.

The split lanes help minimize traffic delays by allowing crews to replace bridges without closing the freeway.

The South Davis Improvement Project is scheduled for completion next fall. It is adding express lanes, replacing numerous bridges, reconfiguring interchanges and improving pedestrian facilities.
