Commuters for a while Wednesday morning were asked to avoid the area of 90th South and surface streets near Interstate 15 in Sandy — unless they had a boat.

A water main break flooded 90th South westbound of that area, including Monroe and Cottage streets. I-15 itself was not affected.

Public safety dispatchers say firefighters and public works crews were rushed to the scene at 5:27 a.m. By 7 a.m., the water flow was cut off and a couple westbound lanes reopened, though traffic still was slow through the area of the remaining lanes.

The Utah Transportation Department said it could take until this evening to completely repair and reopen affected traffic lanes. Along with the flooding, a section of roadway had buckled, creating a hazard.
