Two firefighters were injured in what investigators believe was an intentionally set fire that destroyed a South Salt Lake apartment building.

One of the firefighters suffered second-degree burns to his legs and was taken to a hospital; he has since been released. The other suffered burns to a hand, said South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller. Both firefighters were burned when exposed to radiant heat from the fire, Keller said.

The building, at 351 E. Park Creeke Lane (3060 South), was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived about 3:45 p.m., dispatchers said. The building was vacant and had been bought by the city of South Salt Lake with the intention of demolishing it and expanding a nearby park, said Deputy South Salt Lake Fire Chief Terry Addison.

Crews collapsed the building while fighting the fire, and hot spots remained late Monday. Investigators planned to examine the wreckage Tuesday with the help of an accellerant-sniffing dog, Addison said. Because of the speed at which the fire spread through the building, investigators suspect it was started deliberately, Addison said.

Witnesses reported seeing four teenagers — three males and one female, between the ages of 17 and 19 — peeking out of windows in the building shortly before the fire was reported. One of the males was wearing a red cap and black sweatshirt, Addison said. Another was wearing a maroon sweatshirt with grey pants, he said.
