Layton police on Tuesday were trying to unravel the genesis of a SWAT standoff that began with a drive-by shooting and ended with the alleged abduction of two teens.

Layton police Sgt. Riley Richins said officers responded to 911 reports of a drive-by shooting about 10 p.m. Monday at 301 N. Main St., a mobile home park. Upon arriving, police found bullet casings in the street and that one shot had gone through the window of a mobile home and lodged in the living room wall.

Two small children had been playing in the room at the time of the gunshots, but neither were injured.

Another bullet had struck a pickup truck parked outside the residence.

Then, the case got far more serious: officers interviewing witnesses learned that an armed man inside the targeted mobile home allegedly was holding two 16-year-old boys hostage.

The North Davis Metro SWAT unit was called to the scene and began negotiating with the 22-year-old man. About two hours later, he and the teens came outside and surrendered.

A search warrant was obtained after the trio surrendered. Inside, police found an unspecified amount of illegal drugs.

The teens — who reportedly were inside the mobile home when the drive-by occurred — were unharmed. The adult male was taken into custody for questioning, and Tuesday morning was booked into the Davis County jail on suspicion of unlawful detention, being a restricted person in possession of a firearm, child endangerment, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The search for the drive-by shooters, and their metallic blue truck described as having a loud exhaust, was ongoing, Richins said.
