Layton and Hill Air Force Base firefighters rescued a city public works employee after he became trapped in a collapsing trench.

Layton Fire Department spokesman Doug Bitton said the 911 call from Layton City Public Works came in at 12:49 p.m. on Thursday. Emergency personnel arrived at the accident scene, in a Canyon View Drive residential area, to find the 30-year-old worker trapped in a partial cave-in within the 8-foot-deep ditch.

"The trench walls were stabilized within approximately 45 minutes and crews were able to reach the victim and began extrication," Bitton stated. "[About] one hour and 10 minutes crews extricated the entrapped victim."

The man appeared not to have suffered serious injury, though he was transported to an area hospital to be examined.
